4.A DRAUGHT OF KINDNESS

“A Draught of Kindness” is an excerpt from Charles Dickens’ novel The Old Curiosity Shop. The story presents the journey of Little Nell and her grandfather, who leave London to escape from cruel moneylenders. Their journey is filled with fear, uncertainty, hunger, and tiredness, but they continue forward because of their deep love for each other.

As they travel through the open countryside, they pass cottages, farms, animals, inns, shops, fields, and villages. The description of rural life creates a peaceful contrast to the danger and anxiety they have left behind in London.

After walking for a long time, Nell and her grandfather become very tired. Nell wishes to rest and buy some milk, but she is afraid of being rejected. At last, she chooses a humble cottage where a family is sitting together. She notices an old man near the hearth and hopes that, being a grandfather himself, he will understand their situation.

The family welcomes them kindly. The children help by bringing milk and stools, while the old man speaks gently to them. Nell and her grandfather eat a simple but satisfying meal. Though the cottage is poor and plainly furnished, it is clean, neat, and filled with comfort and contentment. Nell feels a peace she has not experienced for a long time.

When they prepare to leave, the woman of the house notices that Nell’s foot is blistered and sore. With motherly care, she washes it and applies a simple remedy. This act of kindness deeply touches Nell, and she blesses the woman with gratitude. As Nell and her grandfather walk away, the whole family watches them with sympathy and affection.

Later, a cart driver comes along and tells them that the family had asked him to look out for them. He gives them a ride, which becomes a great relief for the exhausted travellers. Nell falls asleep peacefully in the cart. The driver then helps them down near a town and shows them the way.

The excerpt highlights the beauty of simple human kindness. Though Nell and her grandfather are poor and helpless, the compassion of strangers gives them comfort, hope, and strength during their difficult journey.
