8. Punctuation

Punctuation refers to the marks and symbols used in writing to make meaning clear. They help us understand pauses, tone, and structure in sentences.


8.1 Capital Letters

Uses

  • At the beginning of a sentence
  • For names of people, places, days, months
  • For titles and proper nouns

Examples

  1. Ravi is my friend.
  2. We live in Kerala.
  3. Monday is a holiday.

8.2 Full Stop (.)

Uses

  • At the end of a statement (declarative sentence)

Examples

  1. She is a teacher.
  2. They are playing.

8.3 Comma (,)

Uses

  • To separate items in a list
  • To show a short pause
  • After introductory words or phrases

Examples

  1. I bought apples, oranges, and grapes.
  2. After lunch, we went out.

8.4 Question Mark (?)

Uses

  • At the end of a question

8.5 Exclamation Mark (!)

Uses

  • To express strong feelings (joy, surprise, anger, etc.)

8.9 Semicolon ( ; )

  • To join closely related sentences

8.10 Hyphen ( - )

  • To join words
