3.AN ANGEL IN DISGUISE

“An Angel in Disguise” is a touching story by T. S. Arthur. It teaches the value of kindness, compassion, and human responsibility.

The story begins with the death of a poor woman who had lived a miserable life because of idleness, vice, and intemperance. She dies at the doorway of her hut, leaving behind three helpless children: John, Kate, and Maggie. Though the villagers had disliked and condemned the woman while she was alive, they feel pity after her death.

The villagers decide what should be done with the children. Farmer Jones takes John, as he is strong enough to work. Mrs. Ellis takes Kate, partly out of charity and duty. But no one wants to take Maggie, the youngest child, because she is sick and bedridden due to a spinal injury. Some suggest that she should be sent to the poorhouse.

After the funeral, everyone leaves the hut, and Maggie is left alone. She is frightened and helpless. Joe Thompson, the village wheelwright, notices the cruelty of leaving her behind. Though he appears rough outwardly, he has a kind heart. When Maggie begs him not to leave her alone, Joe lifts her gently in his arms and carries her to his own home.

Joe’s wife, Mrs. Thompson, is known to be sharp-tempered and unkind. At first, she reacts angrily when Joe brings Maggie home. Joe calmly tells her that they only need to care for the motherless child for one night. His words touch Mrs. Thompson’s heart. Slowly, her attitude changes.

Maggie’s innocence, patience, suffering, and gratitude awaken love in Mrs. Thompson’s heart. She begins to care for the child tenderly. Though Joe had planned to send Maggie to the poorhouse after getting permission from the authorities, Mrs. Thompson soon decides to keep her. Within a few days, Maggie becomes an inseparable part of their home.

The sick and helpless child brings warmth, love, and happiness into the childless couple’s life. Their once cold and gloomy home becomes filled with affection. Maggie, who seemed to be a burden at first, becomes a blessing. The story ends by saying that an angel had entered Joe Thompson’s house in the disguise of a poor, sick child.

Message of the Story

The story shows that even a simple act of kindness can transform lives. Maggie is not merely helped by Joe and his wife; she also changes their lives by filling their home with love. The story teaches that compassion, care, and human sympathy are greater than selfishness and social prejudice.
